Emphasizing Community in a Community of Scholars
Diana R. Garland, Professor and Chair of Social Work and Director, Center for Family and Community Ministries
Excerpt
... We can recognize overtly, in tangible ways, that our scholarship is a product of a community of colleagues, administrators, secretaries, maintenance staff, cleaning personnel, and board members. How is Christianity reflected in how we pay administrators and lecturers and secretaries, in how we relate to the physical environment and the social communities where we find ourselves planted? How do we enfold lecturers and part-time faculty in the pursuit of our mission, and recognize and nurture their contribution? It is not just that we act 'Christianly' to everyone, but that we recognize the necessity of all those in this place to the success of what we as individuals are tempted to take credit for as our products alone.
